Recent Advancement in Understanding Arctic Maritime Accessibility

Session Description:
Rapid environmental change in the Arctic is modifying sea ice conditions and opening new routes of maritime access. This session invites interdisciplinary contributions on the expanding navigability of Arctic waters. We seek submissions addressing emerging shipping routes and human activities, environmental and socio-economic impacts on coastal and indigenous communities, and evolving governance frameworks, Arctic shipping decarbonization, and ecosystem-based conservation strategies. Diverse methodological approaches are welcome, including machine learning-assisted modeling, satellite remote sensing (e.g., ICESat-2), geospatial analysis, and community-based research incorporating indigenous knowledge. This session seeks to advance a shared understanding of Arctic accessibility, including its emerging opportunities, such as new trade corridors, alongside its compounding risks, including pollution, habitat disturbance, cultural disruption, and ecological fragmentation.
