From Restoration to Resilience: Scaling Nature-Based Solutions in Coastal Systems

Session Description:
Coastal systems are increasingly exposed to sea-level rise, sediment deficits, and intensifying extreme events, challenging their capacity to sustain biodiversity and ecosystem services (ES). Nature-based solutions (NbS), particularly those based on large-scale restoration of ecological and geomorphological processes, offer a pathway for climate adaptation and resilience. This session invites contributions addressing the design, implementation, and scaling of coastal NbS, with emphasis on biodiversity outcomes and ES such as climate regulation, water purification, food provision, and coastal protection. We welcome studies combining field observations, modelling, remote sensing, and stakeholder co-development, including evidence from restoration pilots, long-term experiments, and upscaling frameworks. Contributions exploring barriers, enablers, and governance dimensions of scaling NbS are particularly encouraged. This session aims to bridge science and practice to advance adaptation-through-restoration strategies in coastal socio-ecological systems.
