Sustainable Forest Management under Compounding Stressors: Wildfire, Insects, and Climate Impacts

Session Description:
Forests face mounting pressures from interacting stressors including wildfire, drought, insects, and rapidly evolving climatic conditions. While adaptive forest management is recognized as a key pathway to enhance ecosystem resilience, optimizing interventions under uncertain future conditions remains challenging. This session brings together interdisciplinary perspectives to advance understanding and implementation of adaptive forest management under changing conditions. We invite contributions leveraging diverse tools — remote sensing, ecosystem modeling, field observations, machine learning, and impact assessment — to monitor and evaluate management interventions including restoration, fuel treatments, agroforestry, and nutrient and water management. Contributions may also examine post-disturbance recovery dynamics, disturbance interactions such as fire–drought feedbacks, and stand structure optimization. By bridging diverse approaches across spatial and temporal scales, this session seeks to synthesize emerging insights and identify pathways for scaling adaptive management to inform land managers, agencies, and policymakers with actionable, science-based strategies for forest resilience and climate adaptation.
