Coastal temperate rainforests (CTRs) are among Earth’s most biomass-dense and hydrologically active biomes, yet their coupled hydro-biogeochemical functioning remains poorly resolved from plot to biome scales. Persistent moisture and cool temperatures drive massive organic matter accumulation across a complex terrain. Despite steep topography, widespread saturation of soils creates tight links between hydrological flow paths and biogeochemical cycling of materials, including carbon, nutrients, and trace gases.
This session invites contributions examining how water mediates terrestrial, aquatic, and near-shore marine biogeochemical processes across spatial and temporal scales in CTRs. We welcome observational, experimental, remote sensing, and modeling studies, including those using emerging tools such as eddy covariance, high-resolution remote sensing, isotopic tracers, and machine learning.
Key topics include soil development, carbon and nutrient export, greenhouse gas fluxes, ecohydrological change, vegetation–soil feedback loops, and disturbance regimes. The session aims to advance mechanistic understanding and predictive capacity for these CTR ecoregions globally.
