Remote Sensing of Biodiversity–Flux Relationships Across Scales: From Traits to Ecosystem Function

Session Description:
Biodiversity loss and carbon cycle uncertainty are interconnected global challenges, yet the remote sensing communities addressing them have largely advanced in parallel. Multi- and hyperspectral imaging, LiDAR, thermal and radar remote sensing, solar-induced fluorescence, eddy covariance, PhenoCams, and drone-based platforms now offer unprecedented capacity to observe both biodiversity and ecosystem function simultaneously — from leaf to canopy to globe. This session brings together researchers applying remote sensing across platforms and scales to ask: how does biodiversity variation relate to carbon, water, and energy fluxes? We welcome contributions integrating remote sensing with flux networks, trait databases, and ecosystem models across any biome. Topics of interest include spectral and structural diversity as predictors of flux variability, multi-platform fusion for biodiversity–function monitoring, co-located flux tower remote sensing studies, trait-based retrievals linking canopy properties to ecosystem processes, proximal-to-satellite scaling strategies, and deep learning approaches integrating biodiversity and flux data streams.
