Transforming Air Quality: Science, Policy, and Community in Action

Session Description:
California has emerged as a global leader in advancing community-driven approaches to air quality management, particularly through the implementation of Assembly Bill 617 (AB 617). Enacted in 2017, AB 617 represents a transformative model for integrating atmospheric sciences, regulatory policy, and public engagement by empowering communities to identify air quality concerns, guide monitoring efforts, and co-develop emission reduction strategies.
This session will highlight innovations arising from efforts to reduce air pollution in disproportionately impacted communities, with a focus on implementation of AB 617 and similar programs across diverse regions. Presentations will explore the integration of community air monitoring networks, evaluation of emission reductions from stationary and mobile sources, deployment of zero-emission technologies, and implementation of community-scale emission reductions initiatives. This session will provide a platform for scientists, policymakers, government agencies, and community stakeholders to share insights, evaluate outcomes, and discuss opportunities for advancing equitable, science-based air quality management.
