When Geochemistry is Out of Reach

Session Description:
Many geochemical processes occur at planetary spatial and temporal scales that cannot be witnessed directly. Mineral weathering, petroleum generation, planetary accretion, melt migration, irradiation, and hydrothermal alteration are among the processes studied by necessity in the lab at scales vastly smaller and faster than how they operate in nature. Assumptions, such as substituting temperature for time, allow us to scale up and out from experiments to build models of these illusive processes. The focus of this session is those assumptions. How strong are they? How are they being tested? Are we challenging ourselves with alternatives? We welcome any type of field, experimental, computational, or theoretical study on Earth or any other system that strives to bridge the spatial and temporal distances and the assumptions made to do so.
