Observation to Action: Navigating Water Quality Challenges through Multidisciplinary Approaches

Session Description:
The challenge of protecting surface water and groundwater bodies is an increasingly wicked problem as climate change adds complexity to watershed systems. Predicting water quality and ecosystem functions requires mechanistic feedbacks throughout the aquatic continuum and landscapes. Layered onto these ecological subsystems are a network of water regulators who cannot depend on historical data but need action due to climate urgency, requiring the integration of water quality with actionable climate science. We invite contributions that advance our understanding of climate change hazards and processes; their implications on watershed hydrological, biogeochemical, nutrient, and metal exports; and how those scientific contributions may inform action to protect and restore water bodies. Specific topics include: climate implications on biogeochemistry between riverine, estuarine and coastal ecosystems, climate change considerations for groundwater quality from managed aquifer recharge and surface-groundwater interactions, harmful algal blooms and climate change, making climate and water quality science actionable.
