Translating Climate Hazards into Economic Risk: Analytics for Planners, Insurers, and Policymakers

Session Description:
Flooding, wildfires, and other extreme events are expected to further increase in frequency and severity under continued climate change. These events threaten housing and commercial property, agriculture and other productive capacities, and insurance and other financial systems: for example, in some US states, home insurance is becoming increasingly unavailable and/or unaffordable. Yet, urban planners, economic development agencies, and other policymakers often lack usable information about these growing hazards. This session will highlight advances in combining projected climate impacts with fine-scale geographic information in order to translate physical hazards into economic risks. We will invite perspectives from policymakers and planners identifying needs for new tools in order to foster a conversation between climate data providers and users. Discussion will yield lessons learned to further understanding of how to meet the growing demand for climate change information and decision support.
