Uniting Community Water Resources Modeling and Operational Hydrology: Connecting Research Advances in Large-Domain Hydrologic Modeling, Artificial Intelligence, Hydroinformatics, and Social Science to Forecasting Applications

Session Description:
Recent flood and drought events combined with the emergence of hydrologic modeling frameworks, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and open science is increasing the interest in community water modeling. Advances to a community version of NOAA’s Next Generation Water Resources Modeling Framework by the Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (CIROH) and the continued interagency coordination of the Integrated Hydro-terrestrial Modeling initiative (IHTM 2.0) promise potential for significant advances in operational hydrology. When aligned with use-inspiration, implementation of community water modeling advances may yield significant societal benefit. This session provides a forum for presentations from researchers and practitioners that highlight examples of research advances and operational applications of community-driven large-domain hydrologic modeling. Of particular interest are presentations highlighting applications in forecasting of floods, droughts, and water quality from short to long time horizons and the use of that information for emergency response, water resources management, hydropower, and navigation.
