On Reliability of Regional Decadal Ensemble Prediction for Europe
Abstract:
The gridded observational E-OBS data in version 8.0 (Haylock et al., 2008) and the CCLM evaluation run are used for evaluation. The focus of this study is on the 2-m temperature over Europe. To filter out the systematic error, anomalies are calculated by considering the time period 1981-2010 as reference period. Before the evaluation of reliability, the forecast quality is assessed by the anomaly correlation (Fig. 1) and the root mean square error (Fig. 2) (Wilks, 2006). The low-pass filtered 2-m temperature anomaly averaged over Europe from reference datasets and the ensemble mean reveals that the CCLM captures the climate change signal.
An ensemble prediction system is perfectly reliable when the mean ensemble spread equals the mean RMSE of the ensemble-mean forecast (Palmer, 2006 and Doblas-Reyes, 2013). Therefore the ratio of the ensemble spread to ensemble error defined as ensemble spread score (ESS) (Keller, 2011), is assessed for reliability. The evaluation shows that there is added value for reliability in downscaling nearly everywhere in different seasons (Fig. 3). The spread-error diagrams are provided to assess the behavior of reliability by changing spread. It shows the added value in downscaling in the most cases. By considering annual value, although the reliability decreases in large spreads but the added value of downscaling is significant (Fig. 4).
