Abstract:
Statistical evidence of the Seismo-Ionospheric Precursors (SIPs) is reported by statistically investigating the relationship between the Total Electron Content (TEC) in GPS receivers and 170 M≥5.0 earthquakes during 1994-1999 in Taiwan. A median-based method and a z test are employed to detect the overall earthquake signatures. The SIPs, defined as the abnormal decrease more than lower qauntitle in the GPS-TEC during the afternoon period, significantly occurs within 1-5 days before the earthquakes. Finally, Molchan’s error diagram are used to measure the power of TEC for predicting M≥5.0 earthquakes in Taiwan.
