C41B:
Arctic Albedo: Variations and Trends Posters

Session ID#: 8696

Session Description:
The Arctic is undergoing unprecedented changes, with temperatures rising at a faster pace than in other regions of the world. One of the expressions of these changes is the reduction of surface albedo occurring at various spatial and temporal scales over the Arctic and neighboring regions. In this session, we invite contributions dealing with in-situ measurements, remote sensing data, and modeling efforts that focus on quantifying the changes and trends of both surface and planetary albedo and on understanding the drivers of these changes, as well as estimating their climatic impact. Specific topics include the reduction of albedo associated with loss of sea ice, the earlier disappearance of seasonal snow, snow metamorphism, the presence of light-absorbing impurities, vegetatin changes and the enhanced melting on Arctic glaciers and the Greenland Ice Sheet. We also invite contributions on the effect of cloud and aerosol changes on the planetary albedo.
