Session Description:
Over the past few decades, scientific research has highlighted accumulative anthropogenic effects on the global ocean, including the increasingly apparent effects of human waste disposal in the coastal and deep ocean.  Whether intentional or incidental, the legacy of two centuries of global industrialization has led to accumulations, on the surface, in the water column, and on the seafloor, of potentially harmful materials for ocean ecology and humans.  This session will explore current research regarding detection, assessment and mitigation of sea-disposed human material (e.g., disposed military munitions, dredged deposits, artificial reefs, chemical runoff, non-soluble material, episodic hydrocarbon spills) to foster a broader understanding of the global problem and new collaborations.
