Session Description:
Permafrost dynamics have become a focal point in pan-Arctic research due to potential impacts and feedback mechanisms on the Earth system. Permafrost landscape dynamics also play a crucial role in contemporary subsistence practices, infrastructure, and natural resources extraction in many Arctic areas. Thus, there is an urgent need to (1) refine the understanding of permafrost thawing and aggradation processes, and (2) combine biogeophysical and social sciences with permafrost research.

This session highlights the role of permafrost dynamics and the impact of permafrost changes on the environment and the society. We welcome studies about the implications of degrading permafrost for northern communities, infrastructure, wildlife, hydrology, as well as the storage, decomposition and release of carbon, nutrients and pollutants in permafrost. Studies can be short-term field-based process efforts, long-term monitoring programs, remote sensing and modelling approaches, as well as interdisciplinary efforts including interviews and participant observations on permafrost.
