The Role of the Arts in Geoscience Teaching and Learning I Posters

Session Description:
Art and design provide avenues for exploration, problem solving, and experimentation through which students discover and interpret the world around them. For geoscience learners, art and design offer different modes and ways of experiencing and knowing that complement traditional approaches used in geoscience instruction. We invite abstracts from scientists, educators, artists, designers, and geoscience education researchers to demonstrate the power of the arts in geoscience teaching and learning. We are interested in submissions that highlight (1) approaches and activities that successfully incorporate art and design into geoscience instruction, and geoscience into art and design instruction in formal and informal settings; (2) interdisciplinary courses jointly taught by geoscience and art and design faculty that infuse creative and dynamic ways of thinking into learning; and (3) cognitive research on the impact of art and design on students’ ability to learn geoscience concepts, organize information, investigate and solve problems, and communicate findings.
