Session Description:
Floodplains are highly dynamic environments that fluctuate between extreme hydrological conditions: drought and inundation. Floodplain biological diversity and productivity are intrinsically linked to the characteristics of these fluctuations, which produce complex groundwater and surface water hydrological and hydrochemical processes. Land use changes and regulation along river corridors disrupt the spatiotemporal water and nutrient cycles in both surface and subsurface domains, causing significant modifications to floodplain functions with potentially negative impacts to floodplain and riverine ecosystems. Significant knowledge gaps persist in the understanding of flow pathways of water and its constituents within floodplains, and the interrelationships with floodplain ecosystems, particularly vegetation. Assessing floodplain impacts of human activities and investigating floodplain rehabilitation strategies poses a major challenge for multiple scientific disciplines. We envisage a session which includes different aspects of floodplain hydrodynamics and ecosystem function, with a specific aim to cross traditional scientific silos of hydrology, hydrochemistry, ecology and geomorphology.
