Receiving Credit Where Credit Is Due: Overcoming Barriers to Effective Data Sharing for Collaborative, Transdisciplinary Research

Addressing global environmental challenges requires efficient sharing and wide availability of data and information to enhance reproducibility and trust in the results of transdisciplinary, stakeholder-driven science. Data sharing faces a range of challenges, including sociocultural influences surrounding attribution and credit; the impact of open data on career advancement; organizational frameworks and requirements by funding agencies; and technical and technological developments in computing resources and data metrics.
Co-convened by the Belmont Forum and the Make Data Count project, this session will explore various perspectives on data sharing, including open science best practices to accelerate data sharing, reproducibility, curation, and publishing; incentives and barriers to data sharing; supporting open data through training, funding and other mechanisms; citation, metrics and appropriate recognition of data objects; and how these issues facilitate or inhibit the use of transnational, multidisciplinary data to support decision- and policy-making in a data intensive world.
