Precursory Deformation Before Dynamic Failure II Posters

Session Description:
The fracturing and frictional properties of rocks exert a key control on precursory deformations before dynamic ruptures. New multi-scale evidences reveal that these properties are controlled by a number of mechanisms such as granular flow, time-dependent deformation and phase transformations. At the field scale micro-earthquakes along creeping faults elucidate the evolution of frictional properties during the seismic cycle. At the outcrop scale, it is now possible to quantitatively characterize fractures and fault zones hydro-mechanical properties. At the laboratory scale new experiments are able to investigate the 3D microstructure evolution of a deforming rock at conditions representative of the seismogenic zone. All these approaches show a competition between healing and fault reloading, and ultimately can unravel the precursors to rupture events. This session aims to integrate field, laboratory, seismological and geodetic data to address the multi-scale precursory deformation mechanisms before major ruptures.
