MR21C:
Liquids and Melting in Earth and Planetary Interiors I
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 34594
Session Description:
The study of liquids is critical to understanding the interiors of Earth and other planets. In the Earth, partial silicate melting can occur from the top of the mantle to the core-mantle boundary, and Earth and many other planets have partially molten iron-rich cores. Additionally, core formation may have occurred in a magma ocean. This session focuses on the melting process, liquids, and their effects and properties in deep planetary interiors. Topics may include, but are not limited to: partial melting processes, magma oceans, melting curves, structural and chemical properties of liquids and glasses, and the implications of melt on planetary processes. We encourage contributions from experimental and theoretical studies of liquids and melting, as well as those from seismological observations and geodynamical consequences of melt in the deep Earth and other planets.
