TT12C:
A Review of the Impact of Transient Luminous Events on the Chemical Composition of the Atmosphere: Past, Present, and Future

Session ID#: 45034

Session Description:
Sprites, the first type of Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) discovered in 1989, have been under investigation for almost 30 years. Other types of TLEs like Blue Jets, Elves and Giant Blue Jets were discovered later between the mid 1990s and early 2000s. During this time there has been studies devoted to TLE electromagnetic and optical detections from space and ground-based instruments together with modeling efforts aimed at understanding the inception and dynamics of TLEs in connection with lightning. Other investigations have focussed on the possible local and/or global influence of TLEs on the atmospheric chemistry. The tutorial will review the existing results on TLE chemistry, what types of TLEs can have the most important effects on the atmospheric chemistry, how frequent they are or how the TLE chemical budget compares to that of lightning in terms of species enhancement. The tutorial will also provide insights on possible new strategies to investigate regional and/or global chemical influence of TLEs and will also try to motivate future efforts to quantify the chemical impact of TLEs by comparing chemical recordings from dedicated space sensors and models.
