Session Description:
For site assessments to enable groundwater-contamination remediation site-closure, novel NAPL source characterization is required to understand mass-transfer dynamics, contaminant fate/transport, and resulting plume-scale evolution. Porous-medium and contaminant heterogeneity in the subsurface can greatly affect remediation since mass-transfer and displacement processes can be limited by source hydraulic accessibility. The link between mass-removal and mass-discharge, however, depends on NAPL architecture, composition, and how it is influenced by remediation technologies. This session will focus on mechanistic descriptions of physical, chemical, and biological processes controlling contaminant transport from NAPL sources. Submissions are invited that explore the interaction of these processes with key subsurface properties (e.g., heterogeneity, groundwater chemistry, multicomponent-sources, multiphase-fluid properties, microbial activity, etc.) as investigated through experiments at a variety of scales and/or analytical and numerical modeling. Related studies exploring the influence of remediation technologies on source-zone architecture, mass reduction, and mass discharge are also encouraged.
