Disturbance impacts on ecological and biogeochemical processes in coastal wetlands
Session ID#: 72461
Session Description:
They store significant amounts of carbon, reduce coastal eutrophication and protect shorelines from storm erosion. Their structure, function and critical ecosystem services are sensitive to shifting hydrology, salinity and extreme weather. Thus, it is important to understand how these ecosystems respond to changing environmental conditions caused largely by climate-induced disturbances (sea level rise, hurricanes, storms, floods, drought). Some of these responses may be limited in space and time, others can induce long-term changes in ecosystem function (e.g. carbon storage). In this session we invite contributions that enhance our understanding of wetland biogeochemical dynamics, their response to press and pulse disturbances, and employ new tools to analyze and model these dynamics across terrestrial-aquatic interfaces.
