Combining Observations and Data-driven Modelling of Coronal Mass Ejections

Session ID#: 72867

Session Description:
The understanding of the initiation and propagation of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is an essential requirement for the reliable forecasting of space weather and their potential impact at Earth. This session is focused on attempts to further our understanding of CMEs through the combination of observations and data-driven modelling. Key questions include (1) What is the eruption mechanism?, and (2) How does the observed initial structure affect CME evolution beyond the corona?

Remote-sensing observations of the coronal plasma (e.g. EUV, X-ray, radio, white light) provide information about the early evolution of the CME structure during the eruption process, while models quantify the energy release, magnetic reconnection, and CME kinematics. CME modelling is also required for the global context and interpretation of observations. This session invites contributions that bring observations and modelling together to present a unified picture of CMEs, focusing in particular on their dynamics, structure, and evolution.
