Forest Disturbance in the Context of Shifting Climate: Understanding Disturbances and their Interactions as Agents of Forest Change
Forest Disturbance in the Context of Shifting Climate: Understanding Disturbances and their Interactions as Agents of Forest Change
Session ID#: 74681
Session Description:
Disturbance agents such as fire, insect outbreaks, and windthrow are dominant and integral components of many forest ecosystems worldwide. These disturbances and their interactions impact forest structure, composition, and dynamics, thus impacting carbon and water cycling and energy fluxes. This session will explore the impacts of disturbance agents on the resistance and resilience of forests from local to global scales and investigate how disturbance regimes and interactions across disturbance agents will change in the future. We encourage abstracts that explore the impact of disturbances on forests using remote sensing, fieldwork, modeling, or an integrated approach, with an emphasis on (1) how disturbance frequency, intensity, and size determine forest structure, composition and dynamics; (2) the importance of non-linear and interacting impacts of disturbance agents on forests; (3) the role of disturbance in the carbon cycle and forest ecosystem function; and (4) the characterization of disturbance regimes, and predictions for the future.
