PFAS Multi-media Measurements and Methods, Systems-level Fate, Transport, and Exposure Modeling, Human and Ecosystem Health, Remediation, and Science Communication
Session ID#: 74947
Session Description:
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are used in a wide array of consumer and industrial products, and have been found in air, soil, water, and biota. Nearly all humans worldwide have been exposed to these ubiquitous contaminants. Continued exposure above specific levels to certain PFAS may lead to adverse health effects. Since 1999, concerns about possible human and ecological risks have driven changes in PFAS product chemistry. While an understanding of the occurrence, fate and transport, and exposure is rapidly evolving, there is a substantial need for additional information on these chemicals, including:
Fate and Transport that Contribute to Exposure: Measurement and/or modeled data for PFAS sources, fate and transport in multi-media, and human and ecological exposures.
Treatment and Remediation: Effective methods, modeling estimates, and costs for mitigating PFAS in all matrices.
Science Communication: Strategies to communicate scientific and technical information to non-technical stakeholders and the general public.
