Geochemistry to Health: Linking Geoscience to Exposures and Health Impacts of Nutrients and Toxicants
Geochemistry to Health: Linking Geoscience to Exposures and Health Impacts of Nutrients and Toxicants
Session ID#: 75036
Session Description:
Both metals and organic chemicals are released to the environment via natural and anthropogenic activities. Many of them are pollutants that pose harmful effects on ecosystem and human health (e.g., Pb, Hg, PFCs, PAHs). Others (e.g., Se, fatty acids) are essential for living organisms within certain intake ranges. Physicochemical properties and biogeochemical cycling of these chemicals govern their bioavailability and impacts on ecosystem and human health. The influences of global change like climate change, natural disaster, urbanization, and new policies and technologies could significantly alter the extent of chemical exposure and health impacts at genetic, organism, population to ecosystem levels. This session will bring together environmental scientists, ecologists, geoscientists, and epidemiologists under the discussion of “Geohealth”. We welcome presentations covering new advancements in linking environmental sources and biogeochemical processes to health relevant impacts of any toxicants or nutrients, with particular interests in studies looking at the influence of global changes.
