The research on the in-flight aircraft icing over China: meteorological characteristics statistics on icing conditions and the icing forecast algorithm calibration and comparison

Session ID#: 75071

Session Description:
In this paper, the spatial-temporal characteristics of the aircraft icing distribution around China and the meteorological conditions that are closely connected with the formation of aircraft icing are derived based on the analysis of pilot reports of icing from the Aviation Meteorological Center of CAAC and the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data over four years. By combining the statistical results and modifying the Forecast Icing Potential (FIP) algorithm proposed by the NCAR, a calibration FIP algorithm suitable for China is developed (CFIP). The algorithm is verified using the results from several diagnostic prediction methods including Icalgorithm, the NAWAU,the RAOB and the RAP icing algorithm. The prediction performance of the CFIP algorithm is found to be superior to those of the other diagnostic methods.
