North Atlantic Climate Variability
Session ID#: 75615
Session Description:
North Atlantic climate variability from subseasonal to multidecadal time scales affects many areas of the world. Better understanding of such variability and the mechanisms behind it is therefore an active area of research. The nature of ocean-atmosphere interaction is of particular interest. For instance, past studies have suggested that climate models tend to underestimate the internal variability of the coupled system, possibly due to misrepresentations of the heat exchanges between the ocean and the atmosphere. Atmospheric teleconnections associated with tropical and extratropical SSTs are uncertain, as well as the role of the stratosphere in these teleconnections. Furthermore, there is great debate on the origin of decadal fluctuations in the North Atlantic sea-surface temperatures, i.e., the role of external forcings versus internal variability of the climate system and ocean dynamics. In this session, we welcome observational and modeling studies investigating North Atlantic variability in the past, current and future.
