Pyrogenic Organic Matter: Production, Characterization and Cycling in the Environment
Session ID#: 75870
Session Description:
Recent advancements in the analysis of pyrogenic organic matter have increased our understanding of natural and anthropogenic biomass burning and its residues. For example, pyrogenic organic matter has been shown to vary in lability and composition and is released to aquatic systems as particulate and dissolved black carbon (BC). Charcoal and BC distributions reveal that past fire regimes and pyrogenic carbon pools were affected by variations in climate, landscape processes and human activity, and models of these and other parameters provide us with insights about the future. The goal of this session is to catalyze new cross-disciplinary collaborations. We welcome contributions from the atmospheric, terrestrial and aquatic sciences communities, focusing on local, regional or global scales, and involving lab-, field- or modelling approaches that address production, characterization, environmental effects and cycling of pyrogenic materials (charcoal, biochar, black carbon) in the environment.
