The Use of Geophysical Methods for Groundwater Evaluation and Management

Session ID#: 75983

Session Description:
One third of the water used by humans worldwide is groundwater. Effective, sustainable management of this valuable resource is dependent on accurate information about aquifer properties, groundwater recharge, storage and withdrawal. In this session, we focus on existing or emerging groundwater issues in aquifer systems and the application of surface, airborne and satellite geophysical methods to advance the scientific understanding of these systems and their management. Of interest are examples related to all aspects of groundwater science and management including, but not limited to, development of hydrogeologic models, assessment of aquifer properties, evaluation of groundwater quantity and quality, and monitoring of natural/managed processes. Contributions ranging from laboratory and field experiments to theoretical and numerical modeling are encouraged. Of particular interest are contributions that advance the discussion on how to facilitate the transfer of promising new geophysical methods from the research arena to widespread application in aquifer characterization and groundwater assessment.
