Constraining Greenhouse Gas Exchange Processes Using Remote Sensing and in Situ Observations

Session ID#: 76629

Session Description:
Understanding the relationship between atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) measurements and surface carbon, energy and water fluxes, is fundamental to predicting their future evolution in a changing climate. This session focuses on modeling frameworks (both top-down and bottom-up) that investigate GHG exchange processes using data from various observational platforms, for example, localized surface networks and aircraft campaigns (e.g. ACT-America), active (lidar campaigns) and passive remote-sensing missions (e.g., OCO-2/3, TROPOMI). We invite contributions on: 1) estimation and/or verification of GHG budgets to reconcile approaches ; 2) data assimilation systems for obtaining GHG budgets; 3) examination of the role of observational, a priori and atmospheric transport model errors on estimated GHG budgets; 4) use of innovative approaches such as multi-spectral (e.g., NDVI) and hyperspectral (e.g., SIF) remote sensing, active and stable isotopes, & novel atmospheric tracers (e.g., alkanes, CO, carbonyl sulfide, APO) to partition emissions and provide new insights into process-based model formulations.
