Carbonate Sediments Through Time: Processes of Deposition and Diagenesis
Carbonate Sediments Through Time: Processes of Deposition and Diagenesis
Session ID#: 76982
Session Description:
Carbonate sediments and sedimentary rocks record complex interactions of chemical, biological, and physical processes involved in the precipitation, transport, and diagenesis of sedimentary particles. These processes influencing carbonate petrogenesis, as preserved in rock fabric and chemistry, reflect changing conditions in surface and shallow subsurface environments. This session will focus on process-based approaches to understanding the genesis and diagenesis of carbonate sedimentary rocks over geologic time, including new observations and theory from process sedimentology, biogeochemistry, marine and microbial ecology, biomineralization, carbonate stratigraphy and petrography, and fluid-flow characterization. We welcome contributions applying field, petrographic, geochemical, and/or experimental methods to characterize the mechanisms and environments of carbonate deposition and diagenesis over Earth history.
