Advances in subsurface contaminant transport and remediation: addressing current and emerging challenges

Session ID#: 77393

Session Description:
This session will focus on recent advancements in our fundamental understanding of the fate, transport, and remediation of subsurface contaminants. The physicochemical processes that govern the behavior of these contaminants occur in the hydrogeological, geochemical, radiological, and microbiological domains and include contaminants and remediants ranging from organics, metals, radionuclides, pathogens, nanoparticles, and other emerging contaminants such as PFAS. Submissions leveraging the synergies obtained through coupled theoretical, laboratory, field-scale, and modeling studies that advance our ability to understand the fate and transport of these contaminants, as well as our ability to design and evaluate novel remedial approaches are encouraged. Of particular interest are studies of the unique challenges posed by nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) source zones, including linkages between mass-transfer, microbial activity, and the effectiveness of various remedial technologies. This session will support broad interactions across the hydrogeology community, and invites contributions highlighting research in the vadose, critical, and saturated zones.
