Assessing the Impacts of Climate Variability and Human Activities on Grasslands using Multi-source Data

Session ID#: 77403

Session Description:
Grasslands, occupying ~30% of the world’s land area, provide various ecological (e.g., biodiversity) and economic (e.g., forage for livestock production) benefits. However, grasslands are under pressure due to frequent occurrence of climate extremes and human activities. Sustainable management of grassland ecosystems requires continuous monitoring. Data from multiple sources such as field surveys, controlled experiments, eddy covariance observations, remote and proximal sensing, and model outputs are required to better understand the impacts of climate variability and human activities on grasslands. We seek contributions on: (1) evaluating the impacts of climate (e.g., drought/climate variability) and/or different management practices (e.g., burning, grazing, and hay harvesting) on grassland productivity, species composition, and carbon-water relations; (2) large-scale analysis of grassland conditions (e.g., loss or degradation of grasslands); and (3) interactions of climate and human activities on grasslands. Both field and modeling studies or model-data integration are welcome. Studies on integrating multi-source data are strongly encouraged.
