New Observing Strategies for Monitoring Water Resources and Events

Session ID#: 77438

Session Description:
This session will explore New Observing Strategies (NOS) to address the challenges of rapidly and accurately monitoring and characterizing water resources and associated catastrophic events through describing proposed NOS solutions, i.e., Constellations and SensorWebs.

For many phenomena, the ability to detect, characterize and track natural processes with multiple and diverse observations – space, air and ground – may provide a more dynamic and complete picture of these processes. This is particularly enabled by the emergence of high-quality science instruments on SmallSats, the development of commercial space platforms and the capability to re-task/re-target collaborating observational assets.

Such NOS applied to hydrologic events provide the capability to target satellite observations in correlation with or triggered by airborne/in-situ sensors and obtain measurements with improved spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions, to answer questions such as: where is the water now?  what is the spatial variability of soil moisture in front of an advancing flood?
