High Mountain Asia’s Cryosphere: Collaborative research to address climate, hydrology, geodynamics and hazards
High Mountain Asia’s Cryosphere: Collaborative research to address climate, hydrology, geodynamics and hazards
Session ID#: 77520
Session Description:
The cryosphere of High Mountain Asia is governed by multiple forcing factors that are spatially and temporally scale dependent and orographically controlled. Our understanding of glacier sensitivity to climate change and mountain geodynamics is limited; however, glacier sensitivity impacts water resources, natural hazards and sea level. The region’s complex atmosphere, snow, and glacier dynamics involve interactions between climate systems and topography; ablation and debris cover; glacier lake formation, drainage and outburst; mass movement and debris production; hazard-induced landslides; flooding; and sediment fluxes. Understanding these components requires data sharing, collaboration and research integration across multiple disciplines and agencies. We invite scientists and stakeholders to participate in an interactive session aimed at enhancing research coordination and advancing knowledge of the High Mountain Asia cryosphere. This session welcomes multidisciplinary collaborative study that uses field, remote sensing and/or modeling to describe the coupled nature of atmospheric, climatic, glaciologic, hydrologic and geologic systems.
