The role of coherent structures and intermittency in space plasma cascade, energy conversion and dissipation.

Session ID#: 77534

Session Description:
Simulations and observations have repeatedly shown that kinetic activity and energy conversion in turbulent magnetized plasmas are strongly concentrated in or near coherent structures, often current and vorticity concentrations. In two dimensions, current structures are sheets and cores, and in three dimensions these are more distorted.  This session will explore various types of intermittency and concentrated dynamical activity that may be found in turbulent space plasmas, including heating, local energy transfer, non-Maxwellianity, temperature anisotropy, instabilities, conversion and release of electromagnetic energy, particle acceleration, and internal energy production through pressure-dilatation and pressure-strain interactions.  Similar questions, less well studied, make be asked about collisions and entropy production. Accordingly, a cutting edge question is the relationship between intermittent real space (Kolmogorov) and velocity scape cascades. Contributions from theory, observation and numerical simulation are welcome.
