Data Science for Discovery and Prediction in Porous Media

Session ID#: 77640

Session Description:
Data science brings computer science, statistics, and applied mathematics together to discover new knowledge of a complex system. Machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) methods have shown capabilities in enhancing predictive understanding of such systems. Predicting and controlling transport phenomena through porous, granular materials is critical to a wide variety of applications. Accurate estimation of properties such as porosity and permeability is vital for improvement of many geo-related applications including management of water supplies, selection of cost-effective production schemes, CO2sequestration, developing geothermal energy schemes, etc. This session provides a forum for researchers to exchange ideas on advancing the state-of-the-art through data science for discovering phenomena in porous media. Topics within the scope of interests include but are not limited to (1) innovative applications of modern data science approaches in porous media, (2) use of ML techniques for predicting physical and chemical properties in geological media, and (3) data mining.
