The role of information systems in adapting to achieve sustainable environmental, food, energy, and water systems

Session ID#: 77683

Session Description:
Modern challenges faced by people living on Earth require adaptation at all levels of society. Living requires sustainable environmental, food, energy, and water systems, and resilience to natural disasters. Knowledge and understanding needed to compel and guide adaptation are embodied in available data, but important results are accessible to few and many remain undiscovered. This session seeks to explore how domain and computer scientists can work together to make existing and evolving visualization and analysis capabilities of information systems technology serve the data discovery and analysis process and use results to motivate needed adaptations. We seek papers on related scientific challenges, new information system capabilities to advance the science, and ways to use these advances to communicate adaptation ideas to broad audiences. This session is coordinated by the NSF IS-GEO (Intelligent Systems – Geosciences) RCN (Research Coordination Network) and the AGU Hydrology Section Hydrologic Uncertainty Technical Committee
