How to Achieve Global Land Degradation Neutrality: Monitoring, Mechanisms, Assessment and Mitigation Strategies for Desertification

Session ID#: 78035

Session Description:
Desertification is a global issue, with serious implications worldwide for biodiversity, eco-safety, poverty eradication, socio-economic stability and sustainable development. The increased frequency and severity of droughts resulting from projected climate change is likely to further exacerbate desertification. Combating desertification is necessary to achieve Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN), can play a vital role in securing biodiversity and maintaining crucial ecosystem services, while ensuring prosperity and well-being of more than 1.3 billion people. Understanding the current situation, dynamics, processes, mechanisms and mitigation strategies of desertification is a prerequisite for successful desertification control from local to global scales. This session welcomes diverse contributions that (1) map the situation and dynamics of desertification in the last few decades; (2) analyze the driving forces and mechanisms of desertification; (3) assess the effects of desertification on structure, functions and services of ecosystem, water and food security, climate change; and (4) share mitigation strategies to combat desertification.
