Citizen Science in Earth Sciences: Enabling New Ways of Answering Questions About Our Planet

Session ID#: 78404

Session Description:
Citizen science enables Earth science researchers to gather data and perform analyses that were previously impossible due to limited resources, including funding and personnel. It also provides new perspectives for understanding environmental problems. Despite its applicability to a wide range of Earth science topics, citizen science has only recently gained popularity to augment remote sensing due to questions about the validation and quality of data and analyses as well as the ability to engage and retain participants. For this session we are interested in projects that use citizen science in innovative ways to expand research in Earth science and satellite observations, focused on scientific questions, applications, and results. We are especially interested in how projects have been able to address questions of data collection, quality, and validation, as well as how working with the public has helped to improve analyses and procedures, including development of new techniques or instruments.
