Advancing Access to Undergraduate Research through Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs): models, access, and adoptability
Advancing Access to Undergraduate Research through Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs): models, access, and adoptability
Session ID#: 78723
Session Description:
National leadership calls for widespread student exposure to undergraduate research, from freshman to senior years. Undergraduate research experiences are an effective evidence-based way to build science literacy, critical thinking and communication skills, professional habits, and career motivation. Though undergraduate research experiences are highly regarded, access is neither widespread nor equitable. As highlighted in recent National Research Council publications, course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) can provide large student populations economical and equitable access to research. However, there are gaps in understanding the impact of CUREs and sustainable models of CUREs remain scarce. This session seeks presentations on effective CURE models in the earth, ocean, atmospheric, and planetary sciences at all levels and school types; impacts of CUREs on inclusion; and institutional approaches to expand and sustain CUREs.
