Trace Elements, Heavy Metals, and Contaminants of Emerging Concern in Environmental Waters: Sources, Transformations, Monitoring and Mitigation
Session ID#: 78845
Session Description:
Elevated concentrations of trace elements, heavy metals, and contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) such as arsenic, mercury, manganese, lead, pharmaceuticals, micro-plastics and personal care products in surface and groundwater pose a significant threat to ecosystems, public health and future sustainability of water resources. A considerable knowledge gap exists in our understanding of the key natural and anthropogenic processes governing the occurrence and behavior of these contaminants in environmental waters, their potential risks on humans and aquatic ecosystems, and on ways to mitigate their detrimental effects. In this session, we invite abstracts that address any of the following: 1) characterize the sources, transport, transformations, and fate of heavy metals, trace elements and CECs in environmental waters, 2) study their spatiotemporal variability, 3) develop new analytical techniques to analyze them, or 4) investigate the effectiveness of educational campaigns and novel remediation techniques in mitigating their harmful effects.
