Centennial Overview: Careers in Natural Hazards and Disasters

Session ID#: 79218

Session Description:
The field of natural hazards and disasters is incredibly diverse, both in terms of the fundamental phenomena that we focus on—from earthquakes to floods to fires—and also in the career options that are available to early career scientists. Navigating this sea of career choices can be a major challenge, but also very exciting. In this panel discussion, mid- and late-career natural hazards experts from academia, government, and the private sectors will share their personal experiences with making career choices, as well as the challenges and rewards that they have encountered along the way. The panelists will also reflect on their daily activities and provide their perspectives on the career trends and options that aspiring scientists are confronting. The panel session will conclude with a facilitated question-and-answer period.
