Recipe For A Volcano: Simulating Eruptive Phenomena In The Laboratory

Session ID#: 79274

Session Description:
Experimental volcanology uses laboratory-based investigations to mimic or infer processes that are difficult or impossible to quantify from the observation of natural eruptive phenomena. In addition, laboratory experiments allow for physical parameters to be quantified that are used to both validate theoretical models and as input data in numerical simulations.

This session welcomes experimental studies probing the mechanisms and timescales of eruptive and post-eruptive dynamics. We welcome experimental contributions addressing small to large-scale simulations of volcanic processes using both natural and analogue materials. These may include experiments investigating magma behavior in the eruptive stage, explosion/effusion mechanisms, ejection of gas/pyroclasts mixtures, flowing of lavas, lahars and pyroclastic density currents, formation of volcanic plumes and ash dispersal/fallout dynamics.
