Experimental and theoretical strategies for quantifying the impact of small-scale heterogeneity on effective fluxes within the unsaturated zone and across interfaces with the atmosphere and saturated zone
Session ID#: 79296
Session Description:
The unsaturated zone is intrinsically heterogeneous regarding its structural and chemical characteristics. In this complex system, the interactions and reactions with small-scale heterogeneities collectively give rise to biochemical fluxes within the subsurface, up into the atmosphere, and down into the saturated zone. While in principle, full resolution of the unsaturated zone’s heterogeneity, down to the pore- or interface-scale, would allow for a description of large-scale fluxes, characterization techniques and computational efficiency make it impractical to resolve all variations of the porous medium. As a result, there is a fundamental need to identify emerging small-scale heterogeneities that can be used for sensible system upscaling. We solicit submissions on a range of scales and on upscaling for unsaturated zone fluxes, including but not limited to: land/atmospheric interactions, greenhouse gas emissions, evaporation, soil salinization, solute dispersion, vapor intrusion, mixing and reactive transport, groundwater recharge, colloid fate and transport, bacterial dynamics and biofilm growth.
