Research and Applications Towards Space Weather Services for Aviation
Research and Applications Towards Space Weather Services for Aviation
Session ID#: 79523
Session Description:
The exposure of the aviation community to space weather has increased since the opening of the polar routes at the end of the 20th century. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has reacted to this trend by incorporating space weather advisories into its regulations for operations being interested on space weather impacts on communication, navigation and radiation levels at flight altitudes. Advisories for ICAO will be delivered by three global centres, who will start their operations during 2019. While these centers are prepared to run their services, forecasting capabilities still need some improvements in our understanding on the physics of solar, geomagnetic and ionospheric processes during severe space weather storms. This session is open for presentations about research and applications to nowcast and forecast space weather phenomena impacting aviation. Contributions from aviation users are expected as well in order to bridge scientific results and user needs towards more effective services
