Groundwater discharge to surface waters: patterns, processes and ecological implications

Session ID#: 79658

Session Description:
This session explores the patterns, processes and ecological implications of preferential groundwater discharge to surface waters; a process distinct from hyporheic exchange. Decades of research suggests that the unique hydrological, chemical, and thermal characteristics of groundwater discharge may contribute important functional complexity to freshwater ecosystems. In many freshwater environments groundwater contributions are essential for maintaining habitats and migratory pathways, and the patterns and rates of groundwater discharge are likely to determine the distribution and abundance of many freshwater species. We welcome studies that seek to: (i) improve our understanding of the structural and functional mechanisms that control the patterns and rates of groundwater discharge to surface waters; (ii) investigate how groundwater abstractions, land use change, and climate change modify how groundwater is routed to surface waters; and/or (iii) provide insights into how groundwater discharge influences surface water geochemistry, freshwater biota, and ecological processes in freshwater environments.
