Monsoon Dynamics in Past, Present, and Future Climates
Session ID#: 79674
Session Description:
Two-thirds of the world’s population live in monsoon-affected regions and their livelihood and economy are directly influenced by monsoon variations. These variations are shaped by processes unique to the specific geographical and topographical features of each region; yet, all monsoons share common processes and large sensitivities to regional and global-scale climate forcings. Limitations in our understanding of these unique and shared monsoon dynamics in past, present, and future climates undermines our ability to project future variations of the global water cycle and its associated impacts. We welcome contributions investigating the mechanisms driving regional-to-global monsoon variability in current, future, and past climates on sub-seasonal to millennial timescales. We especially encourage contributions using model simulations, proxy records, and theoretical frameworks that provide enhanced understanding of the underlying physical processes and feedbacks that govern monsoon rainfall across timescales and regions.
